About the TPNW
The TPNW was adopted on 7 July 2017 at a diplomatic conference established by the UN General Assembly.
The core prohibitions of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) are all contained in Article 1.
A nuclear weapon is a nuclear explosive device that has been weaponised, meaning that it is contained in and delivered by, for example, a missile, rocket, or bomb.
Articles 3 and 4 of the TPNW concern safeguards agreements to be concluded with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Article 5 of the TPNW concerns the general duty to implement the Treaty at national level.
